Maria made landfall on the tiny island of 72,000 on the evening of 18 September, with maximum sustained winds of nearly 160 miles per hour. Permanent Secretary - Minister of Housing, Lands & water Resource Management- Mr Lucian Blackmore announced on October 20th that wind measuring devices on island recorded sustained wind speeds of 220 mph.
The Government has estimated 90% of housing stock has suffered damage, either from partial roof collapse to complete destruction. 100% of crops and Dominica's much admired green rainforest has been completely destroyed.
